Grindline Skateparks Start Up Guide

Getting a skatepark built in your hometown doesn’t have to be complicated.

MY ROLE

I was the sole designer on this project. I worked directly with the CEO of Grindline Skateparks during the project.

The Client

For skateboarders, by skateboarders.

Based in Seattle, WA, Grindline Skateparks has designed and built over 300 concrete skateparks around the world. Grindline is fully owned and operated by skateboarders. When Grindline was founded, they were the only company in their category. Twenty years later, the competition is fierce, and Grindline’s dominance is slipping.

Context

Grindline needs skaters to lobby local governments.

Grindline’s main clients are local governments that have decided to build a skatepark with public funds. Because of this, the company relies on skaters to lobby city council members who control their local budget. Grindline’s Skatepark Start Up Guide was designed to help skaters begin that process.

The Problem

The Start Up Guide was needlessly dense and complex.

Without a usable Start Up Guide, Grindline risked losing more of their market share. The document was meant to motivate and inspire skaters to start a conversation with their local government, but it gave the impression that the process was difficult.

My Role

I rebuilt the Start Up Guide from the ground up.

I created a clean, modern layout for the document, rewrote all the copy, and selected new images. The simplified, redesigned Start Up Guide is easier to understand and put into use.
